10K training · UK

Build from a running base towards a manageable 10K

Moving from 5K towards 10K usually means more time on your feet, not simply running every session faster. BestBody can help organise the week and record outdoor activity while keeping strength and recovery visible.

  • Progress from a repeatable running base
  • Longer running added gradually
  • Strength and recovery kept visible
The direct answer

Extend the week gradually and give the longer run a clear place

Begin from the running you can already repeat. Increase duration and distance gradually, keep easier sessions manageable and use faster work only where it serves the goal. BestBody can track distance, time, pace and splits and keep strength work in the same schedule, but it does not promise a result or replace individual coaching.

What BestBody actually does

What to consider for 10k training.

01

Check the starting base

Recent consistent running is a better starting point than a one-off longest run. If 5K is not yet repeatable, build that base before adding more distance for its own sake.

  • Recent weekly frequency
  • Comfortable duration
  • Time available before the goal
02

Increase time on feet sensibly

The longer session can grow gradually while other runs remain controlled. Avoid turning every week into a test of the full distance; training should leave room to return for the next session.

  • Longer easy session
  • Shorter supporting runs
  • Recovery after increased load
03

Add goal-specific work deliberately

Tempo, intervals or hills can be useful when appropriate, but each needs a reason and adequate recovery. The exact choice depends on current training and the intended 10K outcome.

  • One defined session purpose
  • Pace used in context
  • Route and conditions considered
04

Keep strength supportive

Strength sessions can remain in the week when their volume and placement respect the running goal. BestBody’s hybrid view avoids two independent plans competing for the same recovery.

  • Strength volume reviewed
  • Hard days spaced
  • Completed work logged
Practical questions

Questions about 10k training.
Clear, useful answers.

Do I need to run 10K before the event?+

That depends on the programme, starting point and goal. BestBody does not prescribe one rule for everyone; follow an appropriate plan or coach where needed.

Can BestBody record long-run distance?+

Yes. The outdoor tracker records estimated route, distance, moving and elapsed time, pace and splits, subject to GPS conditions.

Can I keep lifting while training for 10K?+

Running and strength can be combined, but suitable total load and session placement depend on the individual. BestBody organises both; individual concerns may need qualified advice.
