From meal plan to online supermarket basket: what is actually connected?
A recipe list, a consolidated shopping list and a retailer basket are three different stages. Check which stage your chosen app supports before expecting a one-tap shop.

Understand the three stages
A meal plan names dishes and portions. A shopping list adds their ingredients together. A supermarket basket contains specific purchasable packs, with local availability and an order total.
| Stage | Example | Next decision |
|---|---|---|
| Meal plan | Two portions of chickpea stew | Ingredients and recipe quantities |
| Shopping list | Chickpeas, tomatoes and onions | Products, brands and pack sizes |
| Retailer basket | Named tins and a bag of onions | Review stock, substitutions, fees and checkout |
Which apps describe a basket connection?
Mealia’s UK product page describes building baskets in Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons accounts, followed by checkout with the retailer. Cherrypick also describes a meal-planning and supermarket-shopping workflow. Verify current retailer support and account availability in the provider’s app.
BestBody’s editable grocery list and dated shopping examples do not, on their own, prove automatic basket transfer. This guide does not claim a retailer integration for BestBody.
Convert quantities into packs carefully
First combine repeated ingredients, keeping units consistent. Subtract usable cupboard stock, then round the remaining amount up to available pack sizes. Check drained weight when a recipe calls for drained tinned food.
For example, two recipes needing 200g and 300g of the same dry pasta require 500g in total. If you already have 150g, you need another 350g; the retailer may still sell only a 500g pack. That extra 150g becomes stock for another week, not a second meal automatically.
Check the order before paying
A product match can be wrong even when the name looks close. Review ingredients, allergies, pack sizes and substitutions. Add delivery or collection costs and check any minimum order amount.
- Remove items you already have in sufficient quantity.
- Confirm the number of people and meals covered.
- Check loyalty-price eligibility at the retailer.
- Choose an acceptable substitution policy.
- Treat checkout as a separate action requiring your review.
Keep the remaining ingredients useful
After delivery, note the products substituted or omitted and update the next meals. A connected plan is useful when it reflects what arrived, not just what was ordered. Keep a simple list of opened packs and suitable freezer portions for the next shop.
