UK supermarket price-comparison apps: products, baskets and limits
A cheap individual product and a cheap complete food shop are different questions. Choose a comparison tool around the decision you need to make.

Three kinds of tool
Trolley advertises supermarket product-price comparison. Mealia describes building meal-plan baskets inside supported UK supermarket accounts. A supermarket’s own checkout is where you confirm the actual order total.
| Tool or source | Main question | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Trolley | Where is this grocery product cheaper? | Pack size, price date and comparable product |
| Mealia | How do my planned meals become a retailer basket? | Supported retailer, subscription and final checkout |
| Retailer website or app | What will my order cost here? | Local availability, loyalty eligibility and delivery |
Normalise products before comparing
A 500g bag and a 1kg bag have different checkout prices and may have different value per kilogram. Compare like-for-like products where possible and record substitutions explicitly. A cheaper own-brand substitute can be useful, but it is a different product and may have different ingredients or allergens.
Illustrative arithmetic: £2.40 for 600g is £4 per kilogram; £3.50 for 1kg is £3.50 per kilogram. The larger pack has a lower unit price but needs more cash upfront. These are example numbers, not current supermarket prices.
Build a basket that matches the trip
Compare the same quantities and the same meals. Add delivery, collection, minimum-order charges and the cost of making a second journey. A saving on two ingredients can disappear when the whole shop is considered.
- Check whether a loyalty card is required for each offer.
- Use current prices for your postcode and order slot.
- Keep cupboard items separate from products you must buy.
- Check use-by dates and storage capacity before buying a larger pack.
What BestBody’s shopping pages can help with
BestBody’s public pages explain meal planning, grocery organisation and comparison methods. Its published example baskets are dated illustrations; they do not establish a live price feed or an automatic retailer checkout connection.
Use the result as a shortlist
Choose the retailer that works for the whole order, then review the basket there before paying. Product coverage and refresh times vary, so a missing item should stay visible in your comparison rather than silently counting as free.
