One family meal plan, with room for different appetites
A household plan works best when it records who is eating, when they will be home and which ingredients can be shared. Start with a few dependable meals and leave room for changes.

Start with people and the calendar
Count the people present for each meal, including school meals, packed lunches and evenings out. Note allergies and dietary needs separately from preferences. Children’s needs differ from adults’: this household guide does not set weight-loss targets for children.
Use a shared base with optional additions
Plan meals that can be served in components. Keep sauces or toppings separate where that helps people share the same ingredients. Make dietary substitutions deliberately and check labels for allergens.
| Meal | Shared base | Adaptation to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Bean or meat chilli | Tomatoes, beans and vegetables | Separate chilli heat and toppings |
| Jacket potatoes | Potatoes and vegetables | Different suitable fillings |
| Pasta supper | Pasta and tomato sauce | Add a preferred protein separately |
| Traybake | Vegetables and potatoes | Cook suitable protein choices safely |
| Wrap night | Wraps and prepared fillings | Let each person choose suitable components |
Write the shopping list by quantity
Add up ingredients across the week before rounding up to pack sizes. Then subtract what is already available. If four people are home on Monday and two on Tuesday, buying for four every night creates unnecessary leftovers.
Keep breakfasts, packed lunches and household essentials on the same master list but in separate groups. This helps you see whether a quoted dinner budget really covers the whole weekly shop.
Choose a retailer plan that fits the household
Use the retailer guides for the practical shop you will make. Availability varies, particularly for local ranges and delivery areas. Compare the final basket rather than assuming one chain is always cheapest.
Review what was cooked, not what looked ideal
At the end of the week, keep the meals people ate and simplify the ones that caused work or waste. A reusable plan can still change with school activities, shifts or appetite. Store and reheat food following official guidance rather than assuming leftovers last indefinitely.
