Meal kits or a planned supermarket shop: compare the whole week
The useful question is what the same household will spend and use over a normal week. An introductory box discount and a recipe’s ingredient cost do not describe the same purchase.

Set a fair comparison
Write down how many people and dinners each option covers. Add breakfasts, lunches, snacks and essentials separately. Check the provider’s current contents and terms rather than assuming every meal kit includes the same things.
| Item | Meal-kit option | Supermarket planning option |
|---|---|---|
| Dinners | Regular price for the chosen box and portions | Price of whole packs needed for the recipes |
| Delivery | Current delivery or subscription charges | Delivery, collection or travel cost |
| Other meals | Food bought outside the box | Food outside the dinner recipes |
| Planning help | What is included with the box | Any app subscription or time spent planning |
| Unused food | What remains after the meals | Packs and portions available for later use |
Separate a discount from an ongoing budget
Record a first-order offer separately from the normal recurring amount. Check cancellation deadlines, skipped weeks and whether the displayed price depends on a longer commitment. Compare a week after promotions have ended if you want an ongoing budget.
Use an example without pretending it is a live quote
Suppose four dinners for two cost £40 delivered as a box. A supermarket basket for those dinners might require £32 in whole packs, plus £4 delivery and £5 of cupboard ingredients you need to replace. In that invented example the supermarket checkout is £41, with some ingredients left for later.
This does not show that either option is normally cheaper. It shows why portions, delivery, cupboard assumptions and reusable leftovers must all be visible. Use current prices for your own comparison.
Decide what convenience is worth to you
A planned supermarket shop lets you combine dinner ingredients with the rest of your groceries. A kit may reduce some recipe and portion decisions, depending on its contents. Consider how much preparation you can realistically do and whether people will eat the chosen meals.
If shopping-list administration is the difficult part, compare planning apps before changing the whole way you buy food. Check whether the app supplies a list or an actual retailer-basket connection.
Try the comparison with your own receipts
Use the same household and meal scope, record top-up shops and note unused food. Repeat the meals that worked. Choose the approach that fits your budget and routine without relying on guaranteed savings.
