A student meal plan for a small UK kitchen and a busy week
Start with the meals you will actually eat at home, your equipment and your fridge space. This example shows how to reuse ingredients; it is not a fixed-price basket or a personal nutrition prescription.

Plan around lectures, shifts and storage
Mark the days you need a packed lunch and the evenings you will eat elsewhere. Check the shelf or freezer space you can use before buying family packs. In a shared kitchen, agree which basics are shared and which belong to each person.
A flexible seven-dinner example
Use the order that fits your timetable and ingredient dates. Adjust quantities to appetite and household size; the menu does not supply a calculated daily calorie or protein total.
| Day | Dinner | Ingredient reuse |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Tomato and lentil pasta | Use part of the onions and tinned tomatoes |
| Tuesday | Bean jacket potato with vegetables | Use beans and frozen vegetables |
| Wednesday | Vegetable omelette with toast | Use eggs and vegetables |
| Thursday | Chickpea tomato stew with couscous | Use remaining tomato ingredients |
| Friday | Vegetable and bean wraps | Use beans and wrap fillings |
| Saturday | Pasta with peas and a preferred protein | Use remaining dry pasta |
| Sunday | A meal from safe leftovers or freezer portions | Review what remains before the next shop |
Turn the menu into a list
Check packets at home first, then buy the amounts needed for your chosen portions. Breakfasts, lunches, snacks and drinks need their own quantities; this dinner example is not a complete weekly food shop.
- Cupboard: pasta, couscous, lentils, beans, chickpeas and tinned tomatoes.
- Fresh or frozen: potatoes, onions, vegetables, fruit and peas.
- Other choices: eggs or suitable alternatives, bread, wraps and preferred dairy or alternatives.
- Check oil, seasonings and any recipe extras before checkout.
Spend on the meals you will use
Compare the cost of whole packs as well as the amount allocated to a recipe. Choose fewer fresh ingredients when you have limited storage, and repeat a meal you like rather than buying seven unrelated ingredient lists.
Keep leftovers practical and safe
Label prepared food, follow package instructions and use the Food Standards Agency guidance for chilling, freezing and defrosting. A Sunday cooking session does not make every meal safe to keep in the fridge until Friday.
