Practical UK guide

Build a protein-focused meal plan without losing sight of the food bill

Use familiar foods, confirmed label values and meals you enjoy. A protein-focused plan still needs variety and a realistic shopping budget; there is no single target suitable for everyone.

Choose the food before the marketing claim

Beans, lentils, eggs, tofu, fish, meat and dairy can all have a place according to preference and suitability. A product labelled high protein is not automatically the best value for your meal.

Check the amount you will eat, the label’s protein value and the pack price. If a medical condition affects your diet, use individual professional advice rather than a general app target.

Compare cost per useful amount

For a labelled pack, calculate total protein as pack weight in grams multiplied by protein per 100g, divided by 100. Cost per 25g protein is pack price divided by total protein, multiplied by 25. This is a comparison unit, not a meal prescription.

Illustration only: a £2 pack containing 50g total protein costs £1 per 25g protein. Check drained weights, edible portions and whether the label describes raw or cooked food before comparing unlike products.

Build a reusable day of meals

These are meal ideas, not a calculated nutrient plan. Set portions from your circumstances and verify the actual ingredients if you track nutrition.

Control the whole shopping bill

Cheap protein is only one part of value. Include fruit, vegetables, starches and other ingredients, then check the cash needed for whole packs. A specialised product may cost more without making the routine easier.

  • Use ingredients across more than one meal.
  • Compare fresh, frozen and tinned options as appropriate.
  • Include ingredients already at home before buying more.
  • Plan storage and cooking around use-by dates.

Track only as much detail as helps

If you log meals, keep units consistent and check the product you actually bought. Nutrition estimates should remain editable. Review whether your plan is affordable and repeatable before adding more targets.
