Calculate running pace, speed and equivalent race times
Use the free calculator for a completed run or a target time. It performs a straightforward distance-and-time conversion; it does not predict fitness, prescribe a training pace or guarantee an event result.
- Minutes per kilometre and mile
- 5K, 10K, half and marathon equivalents
- Simple maths with assumptions shown
Divide total time by distance to calculate average pace
The calculator converts the entered distance to kilometres, divides total seconds by that distance and formats the result as minutes per kilometre. It also converts to minutes per mile and kilometres per hour. Equivalent times simply hold the same average pace across another distance.
Calculate your pace
| Distance | Equivalent time |
|---|---|
| 5K | 30:00 |
| 10K | 1:00:00 |
| Half marathon | 2:06:35 |
| Marathon | 4:13:10 |
Equivalent times are arithmetic, not performance predictions. Terrain, endurance, weather, stops and GPS accuracy can change a real result.
What to consider for free running tool.
Use actual or target time
For a completed run, enter the recorded distance and elapsed or moving time consistently. For a target, enter the distance and desired finish time to see the required average pace.
- Distance in kilometres or miles
- Hours, minutes and seconds
- Average pace only
Understand equivalent times
Holding the same pace over a different distance is a mathematical conversion, not a performance prediction. Fatigue, training, terrain, weather and event conditions can make the real result very different.
- Same-pace assumption
- No fitness prediction
- Conditions still matter
Connect the number to training history
BestBody’s running tracker records route, distance, time, pace and splits. Comparable sessions and several weeks of activity give the pace more useful context than an isolated calculator result.
- GPS estimate
- Comparable route
- Longer-term training context
Questions about free running tool.
Clear, useful answers.
How do I calculate a 30-minute 5K pace?+
Thirty minutes divided by five kilometres equals 6:00 per kilometre, which is about 9:39 per mile.
Is an equivalent marathon time a prediction?+
No. It only extends the same average pace mathematically and does not account for endurance, fuelling, terrain or conditions.
Does GPS pace always match the calculator?+
Not necessarily. GPS distance and moving-time definitions can vary, and signal quality affects the recorded result.
